BIOGRAPHY-PERSONAL/BUSINESS
Steven grew restless running Sign EFX at times, but he followed his accountant’s suggestion and switched his attention from selling his successful business, setting it up under management instead, and looked at finding new creative stimulation. This turned out to be an incredible journey and learning curve.
Two startups failed before he found a market for a novelty board game, Pin the Willy on Officer Billy, which was sold in over 200 adult stores in Australia. Eventually it became too time consuming to produce and Steven took it off the market.
His proudest and most challenging invention was the Hygiene Hanger. It took over 18 months to design and develop, and restrictive production costs locally saw it manufactured in Taiwan. Steven engaged a distributor to help with the importing and warehousing which allowed him to focus on marketing. To his surprise the product gained considerable interest, winning second prize at a Sydney exhibition for new kitchenware products. The Hygiene Hanger sold over 20,000 units and retailed nationally in House and K-Mart stores. Steven took it off the market after a competitor made a similar product in plastic for half the cost and sold it cheaper. Today’s online shopping environment offers an incentive to re-release his invention and Steven has not ruled out the possibility.
